HAS THE BIBLE BECOME IRRELEVANT?

By Barry Cameron

Some would have us believe the Word of God is no longer sufficient or relevant for today’s society.

H.L. Hastings said, “Infidels for eighteen hundred years have been refuting and overthrowing this book, and yet it stands today as solid as a rock. It’s circulation increases, and it is more loved and cherished and read today than ever before. When the French monarch proposed the persecution of the Christians . . . an old statesman and warrior said to him, ’Sire, the Church of God is an anvil that has worn out many hammers.’ So the hammers of infidels have been pecking away at this book for ages, but the hammers are worn out and the anvil still endures. If this book had not been the book of God, men would have destroyed it long ago.”1

Rick Warren, who wrote THE PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE, the bestselling Christian book of all time, other than the Bible, had this to say:

The Bible is far more than a doctrinal guidebook. God’s Word generates life, creates faith, produces change, frightens the Devil, causes miracles, heals hurts, builds character, transforms circumstances, imparts joy, overcomes adversity, defeats temptation, infuses hope, releases power, cleanses our minds, brings things into being, and guarantees our future forever! We cannot live without the Word of God! Never take it for granted. You should consider it as essential to your life as food. Job said, “I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread.” 2

So why would anyone attempt to suggest the Bible has become irrelevant or unnecessary today? Someone said, “Men don’t reject the Bible because it contradicts itself, but because it contradicts them.”

“Men don’t reject the Bible because it contradicts itself, but because it contradicts them.”

A.W. Tozer said there are at least ten proofs that the Bible is the Word of God.

  1. Its amazing unity
  2. Its absolute indestructibility
  3. Its historical accuracy
  4. Its scientific accuracy
  5. Its prophetic accuracy
  6. Its universal influence upon civilization
  7. Its Divine care and copy
  8. Its unparalleled circulation
  9. Its absolute honesty
  10. Its life-transforming power

I want to zero in on the incredible accuracy of the Bible because that’s the breaking point of every argument against the relevancy and sufficiency of Scripture. Every time the Bible speaks, it speaks with absolute accuracy and is accurately absolute. It is absolutely accurate scientifically, historically and geographically. When the Bible talks about geology, biology, sociology, psychology, astronomy, botany, oceanography or even meteorology, it is 100% accurate.

Here are three quick examples:

#1 - Did you know it wasn’t until the 15th century that scientists finally concluded the earth was round? Prior to that they had always believed the earth was flat. However, over 2,000 years ago, prior to their historic discovery, Isaiah had written in Isaiah 40:22 that “God sits above the circle of the earth.” If those scientists had read their Bible, they could’ve saved themselves a lot of time, energy, research and resources.

Their discovery merely affirmed the validity and accuracy of the Bible.

#2 - Genesis 1:16 tells us that, “God made two great lights – the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night.” The greater light is the sun. 864,000 miles in diameter and 90 million miles from the earth. Scientists have been warning us that the sun is actually shrinking. But you can relax. According to their calculations, it won’t burn out for another 10 billion years.

The lesser light is the moon. It reflects the light of the sun and is 240,000 miles away from the earth. Man has walked on the moon and marveled at the dust that covers it. Actually, that dust is made up of little, round, glass objects: titanium granules. God coated the moon with titanium granules to reflect the light of the sun.

It took NASA almost 2 billion dollars to find out the moon was a reflector. But again, if they had read the Bible, they would’ve found out much easier and much sooner.

Ironically, in Moses’ day, people believed the moon was larger than the sun. Yet Moses called the sun the “greater” light. But he didn’t call it the “greatest” light. In our own galaxy, scientists tell us we have a star called Antares. It is so big it could swallow 64 million suns like ours. In another constellation, they tell us there a star named Hercules that is 100 million times bigger than Antares.

What does all that tell us? Simply that the study of science and astronomy merely affirms, once again, the accuracy and veracity of the Word of God.

#3 - It’s only been in the last few years that people began talking about the earth’s ozone. In fact, here in Texas we used to have ozone action days all the time. But did you know that approximately 1,000 years before the birth of Christ, Isaiah wrote about the ozone? In Isaiah 40:22, he wrote that God “stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in.” That canopy protects man from harmful radiation from the sun. Again, this relatively recent discovery affirms the truthfulness and accuracy of the Bible.

Almost 4,000 years ago, Job wrote about the “balancing of the clouds,” a fact now confirmed by meteorologists and scientists. Gravity pushes clouds down and warm air pushes them up. The annual precipitation, in the form of rain and snow, that falls upon the earth is the equivalent of 186,000 cubic miles – enough to cover the entire earth to a depth of three feet. The amount of vapor continually suspended above us is estimated at 54 trillion, 460 million tons. This huge supply of water, suspended above the earth, is maintained by evaporation – the constant lifting of water from the earth up into the atmosphere and it is all accomplished by the sun.

All of this is kept in perfect, perpetual balance by God and was written in the Word of God nearly 4,000 years ago. The discoveries of scientists, doctors, researchers and archaeologists merely serve to affirm what we already know: the Bible is absolutely accurate and accurately absolute.

Here’s the point …

If the Bible is absolutely accurate and accurately absolute when it comes to science, history, geography, biology, sociology, psychology, astronomy, botany, oceanography and meteorology …

If the Bible has a 100% fulfillment rating on every prophecy it’s ever made and most of them were made hundreds, if not thousands, of years before they were fulfilled …

If the things Jesus said, in fact, came true (most notably His resurrection); and there is an empty tomb …

Wouldn’t it stand to reason you and I can trust what the Bible says about life, death, judgment, Heaven and what we have to do to get there?

Remember: “Men don’t reject the Bible because it contradicts itself, but because it contradicts them.”
