THE EMPTY TOMB FILLS US WITH HOPE!

Max Lucado said, “Funny how Easter and taxes often fall on the same week. They did this year. I began this week with two major tasks: prepare an Easter sermon and pay my taxes. With apologies to the IRS, one seems very heavenly, the other very earthly. One minute I’m at Calvary, the next the checkbook. One reminds me of how God paid it all, and the next reminds me of how much I have to pay. Both leave me grateful, first for Jesus dying for me and second, for my three little tax deductions.”

Benjamin Franklin is credited with saying, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”

He was right about death. Death is certain. Every funeral is a sobering confirmation of the truth of Scripture when it says, “It is appointed unto man once to die and after that the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).

But death doesn’t get the final say. That’s the message of EASTER. Peter said, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Peter 1:3).

The Empty Tomb fills us with hope – a living hope!

Will Rogers said, “The only difference between death and taxes is that death doesn’t get worse every time Congress meets.”

The fact is, because of EASTER death can’t get any worse and can’t get the victory over us. Paul said, “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be for God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:55-57).

The Empty Tomb fills us with victory – for eternity!

It will happen again this week. EASTER is on Sunday. Taxes are due on Tuesday. Both are inescapable reminders we need to pay attention to the RESURRECTION and we need to pay our taxes.

One causes us to hope we don’t owe any more. The other reminds us we could never pay what was owed.

One affects us presently, the other impacts our eternity.

One fills us with anxiety. The other fills us with HOPE!

One causes us to hope we don’t owe any more. The other reminds us we could never pay what was owed. But we don’t have to …

… because JESUS already did!
