For years, models, movie stars and major celebrities have had their pictures altered. Imperfections could be perfected, blemishes airbrushed, unsightly bulges minimized or eliminated altogether. Flaws could be replaced with flawlessness and the general public was left believing these people were, well, perfect.
Nowadays, anyone with a smartphone and a minimum degree of digital editing skills can do almost the same thing for themselves, their relatives, friends, you name it. With just a click here and a cut and paste there, amateur photography can suddenly take on the appearance of picture-perfect photos ready for People, US, or Vanity Fair magazine. But the truth is … well, you know the truth.
There isn’t a machine, and never will be, that can make any of us better than we really are.
If a picture’s worth a thousand words, imagine how much a machine would be worth that could make you sound better than you really are? We’ve already got it. It’s called Auto-Tune. A gizmo that can edit and improve the human voice. Invented by a man who used to be a seismic engineer, it employs a mathematical formula to adjust a singer’s vocal flaws, manipulating them into the correct note or pitch.
In November of 2007, a home version of Auto-Tune was released for $99, making it possible for you or the people at your local karaoke bar to sound better than ever. Still no invention to make you look better when people see you in person, but Auto-Tune could help you stay on pitch when you’re singing.
Technology can be a wonderful thing. Digital editing can make people look better than they really are. Auto-Tune and the latest vocal processing tools can make all of The VOICE and American Idol wannabes among us sing better than they really are. But the reality is there isn’t a machine, and never will be, that can make any of us better than we really are. Only God can do that.
2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”
God changes us from the inside out and the changes He makes will last forever! But He doesn’t use digital editing or Auto-tune to do it.
Instead, He used a cross.
